My Top 10 of 2010!

The New Year is so exciting!  There's so much NEW to look forward to, but sometimes it's important to remember a bit of the old as well.  And so, I bring you, My Top 10 in 2010!  Here's a look at the best books (in my opinion) of the year!  (These are not necessarily books released this year, but books I've read this year).  My top two are books that I haven't officially reviewed yet, so consider this a sneak peek at what's coming in the new year!

And as just a little overview, I included my rating of each book as well as the book order and series in which it falls, since they were all from a series!  Enjoy!

Evelyn's estranged husband, Steven, a shady owner of a seedy bar, is not at all happy. During the divorce proceedings, he and Evelyn signed a child custody bond, and Steven is demanding the money guaranteed by the bond to find Annie. The money was secured by a mortgage on Evelyn's grandmother's house, and the True Blue Bonds Bail Agency wants to take possession of the house.

Finding a kidnapped child is not an assignment for a bounty hunter. But Evelyn's grandmother lives next door to Stephanie's parents, and Stephanie's mother and grandmother are not about to see their neighbor lose her house because of abduction.

Even though Stephanie's plate is full with miscreants who missed their court dates, including old nemesis and violent drunk Andy Bender and an elusive little old lady accused of grand theft auto, she can't disappoint Grandma Mazur! So she follows the trail left by Annie and Evelyn-- and finds a lot more than she bargained for. Steven is somehow linked with a very scary Eddie Abruzzi. Trenton cop and on-again, off-again fiance Joe Morelli and Stephanie's mentor and tormentor, Ranger, warn Stephanie about Abruzzi, but it's Abruzzi's eyes and mannerisms that frighten Stephanie the most. Stephanie needs Ranger's savvy and expertise, and she's willing to accept his help to find Annie even though it might mean becoming too involved with Ranger.

Stephanie, Ranger, Lula (who's not going to miss riding with Ranger), and Evelyn's lawyer/laundromat manager set out to find Annie. The search turns out to be a race among Stephanie's posse, the True Blue Bonds' agent, a Rangerette known as Jeanne Ellen Burrows, and the Abruzzi crew. Not to mention the fact that there's a killer rabbit on the loose!

A stable, safe English teacher, Carter Maguire is definitely not Mac’s type. But a casual fling might be just what she needs to take her mind off bridezillas. Book 11 in the Stephanie Plum Series

Stephanie Plum is thinking her career as fugitive apprehension agent has run its course. She's been shot at, spat at, cussed at, fire-bombed, mooned, and attacked by dogs. Time for a change, Stephanie thinks. Time to find the kind of job her mother can tell her friends about without making the sign of the cross.

So Stephanie Plum quits. Resigns. No looking back. No changing her mind.

She wants something safe and normal. As it turns out, jobs that are safe and normal for most people aren't necessarily safe and normal for Stephanie Plum. Trouble follows her, and the kind of trouble she had at the bail bonds office can't compare to the kind of trouble she finds herself facing now. Her past has come back to haunt her. She's stalked by a maniac returned from the grave for the sole purpose of putting her into a burial plot of her own. He's killed before, and he'll kill again if given the chance.

Caught between staying far away from the bounty hunter business and staying alive, Stephanie re-examines her life and the possibility that being a bounty hunter is the solution rather than the problem. After disturbingly brief careers at the button factory, Kan Klean Dry Cleaners, and Cluck-in-a-Bucket, Stephanie takes an office position in security, working for Ranger, the sexiest, baddest, bounty hunter and businessman in two continents. It might not be the job she'll keep for the rest of her life, but for now, it gives her the technical access she needs to find her stalker.

Tempers and temperatures rise as competition ratchets up between the two men in her life --her off-again, on-again boyfriend, tough Trenton cop, Joe Morelli, and her bad-ass boss, Ranger. Can Stephanie Plum take the heat? Can you?

Blog Hop (9)

This week's question is: What are your New Year's Book Blogging Resolutions?

I actually just wrote a mini-post about this for New Year's Day, but it won't hurt to post it more than once to remind myself.  =)  I have loads of resolutions, so here we go:
1. Complete all my challenges.  Eek!  I have 7, but a bunch overlap, so I'm pretty confident I can do this.
2. Comment More.  I never get around to commenting on anyone's blog but my own when I respond to my commenters.  I'm going to work on that.
3. Read over 100 books.  This year I read just over 70, so I'm really hoping to hit 100 for next year.  One of my challenge goals was 80, so that should help me meet it too. =)
4. Blog 5 times a week.  I've been averaging around 8 or 9 times a week, so I think I'll do OK here too, but I felt if it was a resolution, I would be more likely to stick to it.
5.  Use my Kindle!  This one is just for fun as I've been using any and every excuse possible to get that bad boy out =)  I'm so in love with it!
6. Finally, only accept books for review I think I'll actually enjoy.  I may or may not have accepted books to review simply because they were offered to me for free. =)  I'm not going to do so anymore because that makes reading a chore and I don't want to hate my favorite hobby.  That would be depressing.

So there you have them!  What are your New Year's Resolutions??

Finding the right E-Reader

You obviously already know I ended up getting a Kindle, but I thought I'd share the process that led me to choosing it.  I spent the better part of the last two months trying to decide if an e-reader was for me, and if so, which one.  I honestly went back and forth about a dozen times.  For me, the biggest hitch was comparing the e-reader to an actual book.  Clearly, they are not the same.  I was finally able to to make my decision when I realized I could use an e-reader to supplement my library, not replace it.  Throughout this process, and it really was a process, I kept thinking in terms of "this e-reader will replace my paper books."  Finally, it dawned on me that it doesn't have to be that way.  How many times did I buy a book just to sell it when I was done due to lack of storage space?  My tight living space allows me to keep only those books I actually ADORE.  The rest simply have to go.  So, when I realized those "so so" books could be kept without taking up space, I was ecstatic!  (And you also know that I am all hands on deck with this Kindle, so my fears of it replacing my paper books are really now a desire... strange how we change our minds isn't it?)

With the decision made that I would actually USE an e-reader, I had to decide which one.  This was a daunting task!  There were so many options available, it was hard to know where to start.  Throughout my search, I found reviews by bloggers to be invaluable.  As such, here is my contribution to the unsure shoppers.  I'll outline all the pros and cons of each e-reader I researched and tested.  Hopefully someone will find this information as useful as I found other's reviews!  Please keep in mind the information presented here is only my opinion on how this e-reader would work for me.  It in no way reflects on the company producing the e-reader or the product itself.

E-reader #1: The Amazon Kindle

What I Loved:
--the physical keyboard
--access to amazon.com store
--free out-of-copyright books
--large selection of free and discounted books
--whispersync
--Free samples (usually 2 chapters!)
--read-to-me
--ability to share passages on twitter/fb/etc.
--ability to read blogs
--wide variety of accessories
--two color options

What I didn't love:
--no bookstore access
--limited lending feature (can only lend each book to one person. period.)

E-reader #2: Barnes & Noble Nook

What I Loved:
--shape, color, and feel of e-reader
--access to B&N Bookstore
--lending feature (and access to library lending)
--more readable formats (than Kindle)
--games included
--color touchscreen (look only)
--wide variety of accessories

What I didn't love:
--using the touchscreen to navigate
--fewer free books (than Amazon.com)
--fairly heavy

The following e-reader Loves/Did Not Loves come from testing the reader only.  I did not do as in-depth research on these as I did for the above two.

E-Reader #3: Sony Touch Reader

What I Loved:
--available colors
--touch screen
--access to Google Books

What I didn't love:
--limited book selection (compared to Kindle & Nook)

E-reader #4: Sony Pocket E-reader

What I Loved:
--available colors
--compact size
--touch screen
--Access to Google Books

What I didn't love:
--limited book selection (compared to Kindle & Nook)

E-reader #5: Kobo E-Reader

What I Loved:
--available space (8,000 books!)
--color options
--100 free classics, preloaded

What I didn't love:
--limited book selection (compared to Kindle & Nook)
--navigation button

I'll throw out there that I also looked at an iPad, but as it doesn't have an E-ink screen, so I never seriously considered it as an option (also the price was a bit steep).  I know some people read on them, but I read way too much to get just a regular screen.  I can only imagine the eye strain now.

After all that playing (and annoying the Best Buy people who wanted me to buy something and GET OUT!) I eliminated both the Sony readers and the Kobo due to their book sources.  One of my biggest "wants" in an e-reader was access to a bookstore, i.e. Barnes & Noble.  Additionally, the Sony Pocket was rejected because the size wasn't practical.  I loved how small it was, but I just couldn't see myself reading on it.  The Kobo was also rejected for various reasons.  I really didn't like the navigation on it.  That button thing was just weird to me.

So finally, I was down to two choices: Kindle or Nook.  In the end,  I went with Kindle because after playing around with the Nook for a while, I HATED the navigation on the touch screen.  It took too long and was much more complicated than I felt navigation should be

I also thought I'd share some sites I found incredibly useful during my search:

Hopefully my observations are of use to those in search of their new e-reader! =)  Also, feel free to ask any questions about the Kindle or any of the other e-readers I tried out and I will answer them to the best of my ability!

My official review of the Kindle will be up in a week or so!

In My Mailbox (2)

This week I have a few books in my mailbox!  I'm going to forgo sharing any e-books I bought because the list is pretty extensive thanks to my new Kindle, but I will share the paperbacks I purchased. =)

The first book I received was Delirious from author Daniel Palmer.

(Goodreads) One day, Charlie Giles is an up-and-coming electronics superstar. The next, he's a prime homicide suspect as his former employers are picked off one by one. Charlie watches his life unravel as his company and inventions are wrenched from his control, and his family is decimated. With nowhere else to turn, he enlists his schizophrenic brother to uncover the dark family secrets that lie at the heart of the unfolding terror.

Bookaholic Does Blogging will be participating in Daniel's blog tour.  An interview with the author happen January 10th.  My review of Delirious along with a giveaway for an ARC of the novel will happen January 11th!!  Be sure to stop back to get in on the action!

The first six books in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series also found their way into my mailbox this week, as I ordered them for myself for Christmas. =)  I devoured the first one in a matter of a few hours, so I knew I needed to have the rest of the series.  This will get me through most of the books, so it will feed my vampire fix for a while at least. =)

I already posted my review of the first book, but as a reminder, here's what it was about: (Goodreads) The only purebred vampire left on the planet, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But when one of his most trusted fighters is killed - orphaning a half-breed daughter unaware of her heritage or her fate - Wrath must usher the beautiful female into the world of the undead...

Racked by a restlessness in her body that wasn't there, Beth Randall is helpless against the dangerously sexy man who comes at night with shadows in his eyes. His tales of brotherhood and blood frighten her. But his touch ignites a dawning hunger that threatens to consume them both...

I'll save the space and tell you to check out the other 5 books if you want those descriptions too! =)
